People in British Columbia are being encouraged to travel by bicycle during the Fall GoByBike Weeks running province-wide from October 21 to November 3, and Victoria’s Bike to Work Week running October 21-27.
Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, said: “Today marks the start of Fall Bike to Work Weeks, another opportunity to get on a bike to go where you need to.”
“Our government wants people of all ages and abilities to have more healthy, affordable and environmentally friendly ways to travel. That’s why, as part of CleanBC, we introduced Move.Commute.Connect., B.C.’s first active transportation strategy. Our strategy will help communities build more bike lanes and trails, giving more people the opportunity to choose an active mode of travel.”
However, with the days getting shorter and the weather becoming more variable, cyclists are urged to put safety first.
“It’s more important than ever for cyclists to be seen and to ensure their bikes have working lights,” said Trevena. “Whether you cycle to work, ride on a trail to school or bike to get around town, always ensure that you are cycling safely and aware of your surroundings. Drivers can expect more people cycling on the roads during these weeks and, as always, should drive with caution.”
