A new report from the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research has highlighted the high fatality risk for riders of light mopeds.
The Netherlands recorded 32 road deaths among light moped riders, including speed pedelecs and microcars in 2023.
The new study reveals despite light moped riders accounting for only 0.5% of total passenger kilometres travelled annually in the Netherlands, the group faces a fatality risk approximately 30 times higher than that of passenger car occupants.
According to SWOV, the demographic most affected includes young people aged 16-24 and those over 50, with 94% of the victims being men.
The organization said in recent years, several measures have been implemented to enhance road safety for light moped riders, including the most recent and impactful measure – mandatory helmet use.
